Compression Set Failure Mode in O-Rings.

Compression sets are probably the most prevalent cause of O-ring failure. An successful O-ring seal necessitates a continuous "seal line" between the sealed surfaces. The construction of this "seal line" is a consequence of gland design and seal cross section, which determines the appropriate amount of squeezing (compression) on the O-ring to maintain seal integrity without excessive seal element deformation.

 

Factors that contribute to compression set failure of an O-ring seal:
1. Choosing a material with weak compression set characteristics.
2. Improper gland design. 

3. Excessive temperatures caused the O-ring to harden and lose its elastic qualities. (High temperatures might be induced by system fluids, external environmental conditions, or frictional heat buildup.)
4. System fluid causes volume increase in the O-ring.
5. Excessive squeezing caused by overtightening of adjustable glands.
6. Material was not completely cured (vulcanized) during manufacture.
7. Introduction of a fluid that is incompatible with the substance.
 

Improving the rate of compression set
1. Utilize "Low Compression Set" material wherever possible.
2. Choose a material that is appropriate for the anticipated service circumstances (one that can withstand higher temperatures or has stronger chemical resistance).

3. Reduce the system's operating temperature.
4. Check for frictional heat build-up at the seal interface and decrease if necessary.
5. Ensure that the groove proportions are compatible with SNAK's suggested methods.
